Kolkata streets , gullies and lanes ,sidewalks are all owned by hawkers. My locality is primarily a residential area with blocks of apartments and single bunglows. There are few vacant plots still lying around. This week the foundation stone was layed for a management training institute in one such vacant plot. There were few unauthorised hawkers who had semi-permanent shops in front of this land.
These people are now being allocated space just in front of our housing complex by local political big bosses. The secretary of our cooperative and other members met the local councillor to register a protest. But everyone knows this is going to be another futile attempt at redressing the ills of a cancerous system.
There are too many migrants in the city, too many poor people - all lucrative vote banks for political parties. It is easy to pamper them than try and find out the roots of the problems and make a serious attempt to find solutions.
