Yesterday was Uttam Kumar’s 30th death anniversary. It is amazing that even after so many years he still draws such admiration from people of all ages. I asked my college going niece whether she had watched any Uttam Kumar movie. She immediately rattled off quite a few names. I was surprised but still curious. I asked her whether she liked them to which the answer was a big yes.Now that was something intriguing for me. What makes UK such a draw for people who belong to the post UK generation . Is it the magic of Uttam-Suchitra screen romance or is it the sheer versatility and skill of an actor. The movie that my niece mentioned initially was not a UK-SS movie. My favourite is Agnishwar – my ideal of what a doc and a man should be like. I have watched the movie several times and never tire of watching it. I know there are still people like Agnishwar in India and possibly in other parts of the world. In fact my GP is a close resemblance of Agnishwar .UK portrayed the character to perfection . Will there be ever another actor like him from Bengal.
