An evening with Buddhadeb Guha : the writer

Buddhadeb Guha one of the most loved authors of Bengal was in the library last Friday. He was speaking on holidays and travel. Though now he is old and ailing, affected by occasional dementia and his one time athletic body was losing balance it is still a pleasure to hear him speak. A huge man, he had injured himself by tripping and falling at ITC Sonar recently. He had to be very careful since the library floor was crowded and quite slippery in some places. About eighty people had turned up to meet the author.

A widely traveled man across the globe he enthralled the audience with his reminiscences. He belonged to an era when hunting was a sport and he was an avid hunter. Mr. Guha had spent time living in jungles and forests . He mentioned that an eligible Masai youth had to kill a lion on foot .The Masai lived on venison, milk and blood and had foul body odour . The Masai showed their affection by smearing your face with their sputum. He spoke about the coral reefs in different parts of the world, the tribal people of India and their simple habits. He spoke about the beautiful island of Seychelles.

A versatile personality Mr. Guha is a singer, writer, a traveller, and very successful chartered accountant by profession. In his heydays he was equally at home with the CEOs of corporate houses the Mundas and Masais of the world. Many of his books are best sellers and his fan following is impressive. He continues writing and has written for this coming festival season and the year’s annual festival numbers.
