At the interview panel

Being part of interview panels can be a great learning experience. Specially if you are interviewing young people coming from diverse working backgrounds you can get a very interesting picture of the world around you. Lot of young people working in the flourishing BPO sector in India would not mind giving up their jobs at the first available option. Most of them work long shifts at deathly hours and their faces show signs of tell tale fatigue . Many of them suffer acute health problems .We met a guy who had lost over 15 kilos before finally quitting the job. Those handling US clients draw a very bleak picture of the US economy. Most of them have English nicknames attached to them. A girl mentioned that one client refused to talk to her since she was Indian. But people would also sometimes go out of their way to acknowledge a good service.

We got a very humorous description of people from different states of India from a guy who was working with a domestic airline. People from Ahmedabad were extremely demanding and invariable shouted to get things done. People from Bengal were soft spoken, people from Mumbai had a couldn’t -care- less attitude. The most disciplined and orderly people were from Chennai. Now these descriptors matched the characteristics of the relevant cities .For example Ahmedabad was a commercial city of enterprising people who were extremely busy and always in a rush .Bengalees on the other hand are known for their love of literature and culture and tend to be slightly laid back .

A guy who worked in a company owned by one of the leading industriaists of India kept on eulogizing the owner and punctuated every alternative sentence with a reverential address to the owner of the company .

Sometimes you get to hear stories of great personal triumph over extreme adversities. Such individuals inspire others to look at the positive things in life .You are reminded that it is possible to overcome the worst misfortunes that strike you and celebrate life once again.
