New Age Bengali cinema

He is a young upcoming actor with few hits under his belt. I met him and his friend a popular commercial movie script writer last week. I have never seen his films .I confessed .His films were not for my generation. He insisted that  his  movie "ley halua" was for all age groups. He was confident and requested me to see the film if possible. Bengali commercial films are now quite popular with youngsters. They sport foreign locations and trendy styles and latest technology combined with bollywood style choreography. These are films made for masses.
The actor's friend who wrote scripts was quite frank. The producer would invest money on projects which would bring profits. In Bengal if there were 100 cinema halls, 80 would be catering to a rural and semi-urban crowd .The script had to be written in such a manner so that it could draw at least six whistles from the boisterous crowd. The writer who was also a stage actor showed me how the pan-chewing crowd blew whistles. It was hilarious.
Since the writer was no Satyajit Ray he was not bothered with the intellectual merit of his script. He wanted to entertain the masses .However he did mention that even rural audience were not so gullible nowadays .A badly made movie was often rejected outright even by his target audience
