The fashionable veil

The French furore over the Muslim veil did not make much sense to most of us. In India such topics are non-issues. In rural India it is quite common to find Hindu women covering their heads and faces with scarves ,pallus, do pattas. So veils are not something new in Indian society. However I had never seen any of my Muslim colleagues wearing a veil at the workplace until this very vivacious middle aged lady joined us recently.  Her family was settled in Libya but had to leave the country due to the current unrest in that country. A hijab clad woman is an unfamiliar sight in any modern office premises. When I discovered that this lady was religiously wearing a hijab everyday to work, I was quite curious and at the same time fascinated by her attire. I realised that it is by choice that she wears a veil.

With the onset of the summer season I was a bit worried imagining her discomfort in this tropical humid weather. So I asked her how will she bear the heat and humidity .She smiled and said she would make some more cotton ones. Since she was working in air-conditioned rooms it was not really a major problem for her. I noticed that everyday she was wearing a beautifully embroidered loose outer garment, the colour of the intricate thread work matching the colour of her head scarf. She had a rich wardrobe I could see. She looked beautiful. One day she wore a bright orange coloured one which was tailored from an expensive Bengal jamdani saree. I discovered that the controversial veil could also become a fashion statement.
