Scene 1
As I travel to work everyday in a yellow cab I cannot miss the strained faces of passengers in crowded public buses. During office hours Kolkata buses are like sweatshops .It is only poor people, men and young people who are able to board public buses midway during such hours .I cannot imagine a middle aged lady like me attempting to board such a bus. During office hours people like me can only get on to a public bus at the starting point and get off at the end point. There is no mid way.
However my point is why should anyone ride a bus in that manner. In the morning I watch hordes of people waiting at bus stops which are connected to suburban railway stations .They wait to catch connecting buses to their next destination. The moment a bus arrives there is a mad scramble. Their already tired bodies from long travel in crowded trains go all out to catch a foothold on the bus by any means. I find the whole thing degrading and inhuman.
Scene 2
If you look at people working near Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s open garbage vats you will feel like disappearing from the face of this earth. How can we not think of the working conditions , health and hygiene of these very important workers who are like oxygen to this overpopulated , overpolluted city. They work with small shovels to scrape through the stinking filth while moving garbage from the vats to the waiting trucks. I find the whole process incredibly inhuman. Most of the time these men are covered with filth , with no masks ,gloves or helmets. I wonder if KMC at all considers them to be human beings like us.
Just because people are poor they have to bear such indignities.
