Bengalees and their icons

My cabbie friend from Himachal used to say Bengalees have very small brains. What he meant by that was Bengalees love to mess around with small issues and lack foresight and long term vision. Nirad C Chaudhuri’s had described Bengalees as self-destructive/suicidal . The current controversy around Saurav Ganguly reinforces Nirad C Chaudhuri’s statement. Or why would any tribe want to denigrate it’s sole icon of recent times in such a fashion. I thought Saurav should have been left from all this politicking. But no .He is too powerful a figure to be ignored. Apprehensions are that like Lord Krishna if he takes one side the opponent will be vanquished. Whether he is actually such a threat is questionable. The Election Commission (EC)had the good sense to rubbish all allegations made by the opposition party. What saddens me is that Bengalese can so easily belittle a national hero who had brought so much pride to the nation and the tribe by virtue of his outstanding abilities and contribution to Indian cricket. I did not see any protests from even his fans who are so vociferous otherwise whenever they feel their hero has been slighted on any real or  imaginary reasons. Fortunately Saurav himself excused himself from the planned campaign. I understand that he will  now figure in EC's campaign in other states.

When will we have sense and when will we grow above petty interests. Let us show respect where it is due.
