Indian writers in English

I often meet budding authors who write in English and want to get published. Most of them want to get in touch with international publishing houses in the first place and want us to help them to locate agents and publishers abroad. But it is good to know that the Indian market now holds immense prospects for creative writers in English. Writing is a serious profession nowadays and young Indians can look towards Indian role models for inspiration .Chetan Joshi is a talented young man who has established himself as a writer. It was lovely speaking to Chetan recently . He is intense ,intelligent and passionate about his writing. .Chetan is also an excellent trainer on creative writing .He was in Kolkata to conduct a workshop for aspiring writers.

Most people who consider writing as a serious business write with the primary goal of getting published. Chetan thinks this is a wrong approach for a new writer. A writer should write at least 20 stories before he can start thinking about publishing his work . We were discussing adopting creative writing as a profession .I guess this obviously excludes the born writers or the exceptionally talented ,gifted authors who cannot be measured by any kind of yardstick. Is there any merit in the saying that practice makes perfect .Chetan advises a writer should finish one pot of ink before he can even get some understanding of his writing style and skill. Writers usually are inclined to adopt particular genres of writing. Given the same situation different writers would be mentally inclined to write different stories. A situation could be construed as a thriller or a romance depending on the person’s way of thinking. Thus we find some authors who excel in writing crime fiction while others write romances. Graphic novel is another area which is growing in popularity but most of the time this is collaborative creation .Sarnath Banerjee is a bestseller in this genre.Chetan has teamed up with his friend to produce an adult graphic novel.

Chetan tells me it is not difficult to get published nowadays .There are publishers who are looking out for good stories .This is encouraging news for young writers. I asked Chetan if has a blog. He tells me his hands are full with various writing and training projects .He has no time for blogs.
