Fall of the communists

Now that election results are out postmortem is going on. For many it is the end of communist ideology in India. A retired professor who stays in an oldage home started calling up his relatives from five in the morning on the historic day  and greeted each one of them with famous lines from Tagore. My brother was one of his victims .My friend who works in a public library run by the government was so overjoyed by the defeat of the communist party that she called up apolitical friends like me to share her joy. As if she was waiting for years to give vent to all the venom she had silently borne for all these years. For some people it was like gaining second independence from an era of repression , bad work culture and mediocrity.
Government run libraries are notorious for their sorry state of affairs. The Governement has recently set up some beautiful public libraries in the city - the State Central Library ,the Metropolitan library- can boast of world class architecture .However the road ends here. Though there is no dearth of funding the leadership and will to make these institutions functionally world class is completely missing. There are professionals who want to work but do not know how to. Staff coming habitually late to work and leaving well before closing time , staff sleeping peacefully during afternoons , staff gossiping through out the day , ladies drying their long hair , sharing recipes , discussing latest fashion trends and everybody engaged in the famed Bengalee business of adda is commonplace. Anything remotely connected to learning ,enhancement and dissemination of information is looked upon with suspicion.
Professionals like my friend are desperate and even want these institutions to be privatised so that they get a chance to work.
